Spring 3 - Inside the cafe, coffee cups. *rewritten

“I’m sorry bout what happened earlier.”

“It’s alright. No damage done.”

I was smiling as I said that. Looking at her, I noticed a couple of things I haven’t seen before. This time I was certain that she was from our University. I spotted a University badge by the neck of her shirt. Only our University use this kind of I.D. Her badge has two circles. So this means…

“So, you’re a sophomore.”

“Uhm, well, yeah.”

A sophomore, huh... Being a senior I can quite relate on underclassmen lives well. Having more experience in campus life.

“So, are you familiar enough with the campus now? It’s been a year since you first came here.” I was kinda joking around. I was desperately trying to lighten up the mood. She wasn’t smiling very much and was looking down all the time. Her shoulder length hair always seem to cover her face.

“Yeah. I don’t get lost as often as last year.” She chuckles a bit and begins to smile a bit.

By then, I can clearly see her face. Those mysterious eyes… it begins to melt into my mind… That smile-

“Sir, here's your coffee.” The waiter came with our coffee. I am quite known in this café, being a regular here.

“One for the lady as well.”

Now where was I? Oh right, that smile... Seeing it somehow made me feel lighter. That I know her already. I was consumed into trance. Caught deeply locked looking at that soothing smile. I knew she was starting to feel awkward. I looked away and directed my attention to the coffee.

“Warm, huh? I like it here. What do you think?” Obviously trying to change to topic.

“Yeah, warm. I’ve never been here before, in fact. Actually, never been to most of the places around campus.”

“Huh?! Why’s that? It’s been a year since you got here. That’s sad.”

“Well, you see…my home is far away… so I leave home and school early because of the travel time.”

That’s sad… college life is supposedly based on the new found freedom. After all, high school imprisoned us for four years already and here she is, being caught in the same old confinement.

“Sad… if it’s ok with you, I’ll show you around sometime.”

“I don’t know… maybe…”

We sat there drinking coffee. But silence was our conversation. And distant looks were our words. Soon, looking at this girl’s eyes, I began feeling this warmth…is it just the coffee… or maybe…

“Uhm, I have to go, sorry... Thank you very much.”

And so she left, before I can even respond. Before I can even snap out of my pool of thoughts. The last thing I saw, was the closing of the café door. The ringing of the wind chimes. And... the sight of her hair being blown across her cheek. She’s truly beautiful.

I look in the empty coffee cup resting peacefully in the table’s surface. It once held coffee in its hollow holding, once hugged the warmth it brings. But now, only cold emptiness satisfy its longing cries. Yet hope is there, that one day, it will again be imparted with the former warmth and once again be reunited.

Spring 2 - Incidents

Spring – new beginnings. People coming out of the dormitory leave in groups, pairs and some others leave alone. Some are off to go to class, some to hang out and some off for some romance. Me? I’m off to the café. I really need my morning coffee. I just can’t start my day without it. Besides, it’s still way too early. Time check- it’s 8:00am.

Droplets of rain started to fall as the formerly beautiful cloudy sky turn into a darker denser looking rain cloud. From tiny droplets barely noticeable to sudden downpour, the rain shot against the ground. Krssshshsshshshshss! Students walking under unroofed ground ran towards cover. Some opened up umbrellas and continued walking. Some simply panicked.

I opened up an umbrella, after rummaging through my back pack. It’s a good thing I never took it out there in the first place. I was relieved and thankful. Sadly, not everyone was as lucky as I was. Minutes later, I hear footsteps splashing as it landed on the watered earth. Louder and louder it came. I stood still, trying to identify the direction of the sound. Thump thump. Thump thump. Thump thump. Able to pinpoint the direction of the sound, I turn towards it. And, without warning- Bump! Bamm! Books, notebooks, pens and pencils went flying all over the place.

I find myself thrown to the ground. Just above me, was… was a… was…a… A GIRL? The rain continued pouring. Unable to shield myself from the rain, now, wet. Stunned for few seconds, both of us seemed to have felt the shock the fall dealt. It was only a few more seconds after the collision were we able to realize what had happened.

“Are… Are you alright, Miss?” I asked her, still lying on the ground.

“huh… wha? I am sorry!” she replied, realizing that she was on top of me. Quickly, she backed of a few feet away and apologized, “Sorry! Sorry!”

I stood up, without replying and without even acknowledging her apology. That’s when I helped her up her feet and said,

“It’s alright. But are you alright, Miss?”

“I think so,” she timidly replied and she looked around as if realizing that her stuff are scattered around. “Oh no! My books! My notes… AH!” She began picking up her stuff, placing it quickly inside the bag she was carrying and stacking it in a pile. Naturally, I helped her out.

“Sorry about that. And, thank you once more.”

“You really should be careful next time”

“Sorry and… I will.”

I picked up my umbrella. It landed a few feet away, being thrown off during the collision. I went back to her and asked,

“So, where are you headed? Do you have class?”

She grips her books firmly carrying it with both arms. She timidly looks down and then answered,

“I was actually just roaming around a bit, my class starts 9am.”

This was actually the first chance I got to actually look at her. From then, I would say, she’s cute. She is a bit shorter than me. Her eyes are brown, mysterious in fact, hidden beneath those framed glasses of hers. Her hair is a darker shade of brown. It was short in length, barely passing her shoulders. Her complexion is white but far from pale. Her body build not really that slim and not that huge. I’d say it’s adequately proportional.

“Uhm, are you free then? Wanna grab a cup of coffee? If it’s ok…”

Coffee would be nice. Both of us were soak in rain and coffee would probably warm us up a little. I was headed there anyway.

She agreed. Together, we went to the café I was telling you about. The rain began to lighten. Slowly from a heavy pouring to this calm and soft drizzle. The sky cleared up, blue and happy, typical of a spring day. Puddles on the ground appeared, like pieces of the sky that fell down here on the ground. It was like the joyous spring time scenery minutes ago. Only this time… It starts with a new beginning.

Spring 1 - Beginnings

Around 7 in the morning, it was Monday. Class was to start and the University Clock tower bells ring. The bells emanate a sound heard vividly in even the noisiest and farthest room on the dormitory. Clang! Clang! Clang! Ding! Dong! Dong! The bell always rings at least an hour before the first class of the day. And usually, this first class starts at 8 in the morning. Moreover, majority of 8o’clock classes are for the freshmen.

The sound of opening doors comes next after the seemingly effective wake up call. The bells were never really enough to wake me up nowadays. And besides, my first class starts at 9:30 am. Still managing to dose in and out of a half-sleep state, I would cover up my head with a pillow. The next thing I was most likely to hear would be the hustling and bustling of the underclassmen crowd outside the dormitory hallway. Annoying as it was, I was always either too tired or too lazy to shush them down.

This was my typical morning.

Today, everything was different. I woke up hours before the first bell even rang. I even had time to eat a seemingly normal breakfast. Breakfast would be, a slice of toast and a glass of milk. Or if I was lucky enough to get a bigger allowance, rice and scrambled eggs. Now, I’m ready for class. Uhm… a bit earlier, in fact, 2 hours earlier - 7:30am.

I leave my room, backpack hanging in one shoulder, and spot groups of underclassmen getting ready for class. Freshmen in the edge of the hall, Sophomores in one side and Juniors in another. It’s not really easy identifying who is who here. The University doesn’t require uniforms; instead we wore these badges up the necks of our shirts. Each circle on the badge represents one year level. One circle badges for freshmen, two for the sophomores, three for the juniors and 4 for the seniors.

Upon leaving my room, I walked silently towards the main entrance of the dormitory. From there, this wonderful picture was painted. The frame of the two-door entrance would be the picture’s borders and the scenery outside the picture. The garden was directly in front of the entrance. Grassy hedges and flowering plants crowded the garden throughout its vicinity. Far behind that view of the garden, magnificent building stood tall among the rest. The rising sun resting almost beside the tower gave out a soft, soothing light. That picture marked the beautiful start of a seemingly beautiful morning.

Spring. Yes. It was Spring.

The flowers in the garden were still starting to bloom. The earth still was moist. The fragrance of budding flowers was dominant. The scent of moist earth and dew laden grass complemented the fragrance. The cold and soft winds blow soothingly through the open space. The sky was cloudy, and strangely, it appeared it would rain. But still, it was spring. Finally!

Prologue

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.

These are the seasons that people see, not only in nature... but in life.

Spring.

Radiant sunlight brightens up every corner of Winter's harsh trail of darkness. Lush greenery covers the formerly cold and bare soil beneath it. The fresh scent of life, envelopes a vast area of the blooming surroundings. Spring. Life.

Summer.

Heating rays warm up even the coldest of corners Winter's loneliness once occupied. Summer days of searing passion, to summer nights of chilling loneliness.

Autumn.

Of falling leaves to falling hearts. Red and orange winds blow past the bare and lifeless woods. Crisp scent of Autumn fills the hearts and mind of all.

Winter.

Lonely, Cold. Unmoved, stagnation of frozen crystals we call snow carpet the soft moist grounds. Cold and often lonely nights pass inevitably. Unexplained sensation of love;s warm welcomes... and often soft goodbyes.
